An homologous series of 4-((s)-2-methylbutyl) bensoyloxy 4- n-alkoxyphenylpropiolates was prepared and its thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties determined. Each ester in the series exhibited the smectic A phase, and several exhibited the smectic CC* phase. The mesogenic phases appear near room temperature and hence these compounds are potentially useful in the fabrication of electro optic devices. The parent acids are low melting nematic liquid crystals.
