Transoceanic Fiber Sensing using Real-Time Coherent Transceiver with Hardware-level Sensing Readouts

We implement a real-time coherent transceiver with fast streaming outputs for environmental sensing on an FPGA. We show continuous sensing using phase and equalizer outputs over 12800 km of submarine cable, demonstrating continuous environmental sensing including a highly likely detection of a magnitude 4.9 earthquake, >10x weaker than previously detected with data transponders
