Transparent End-User Authentication Across Heterogeneous Networks

In this paper we focus on providing transparent end-user authentication across different mobile administrative domains: UMTS and WLAN network technologies. In this paper we propose two solutions. For the first solution, authentication is based on the mechanisms specified for the UMTS network. This mechanism relies on the shared secret between the UMTS SIM (USIM) card and the users home network. For the second solution, authentication is based on digital certificates. This solution illustrates the usage of different authentication mechanisms in the UMTS and WLAN networks.
