Tunneling images of biatomic steps on Si(001).

Tunneling images of vicinal Si(001) tilted 4D about the [bar over 110] direction have been obtained. The topography of the surface is dominated by straight double steps running along the [bar over 110] direction separated by terraces of relatively uniform width. The step edges are parallel to the axis of the dimer pairs that form the reconstructions on the terraces.
