UMTS Packet Service Infrastructure: Distributed is Cheaper

In the highly competitive world of wireless services, network operators always seek competitive advantages, whether it is in enhanced revenue generating capability via differentiating service offerings or in capital and operational cost saving opportunities that permit them to operate their networks more economically. Once an operator has identified what mix of services to offer and what content to provide, the network infrastructure must be determined that most cost-effectively supports the service offerings. This involves striking a balance between capital (CapEx or DepEx) and operational (OpEx) expenses so that the operator's total cost is minimized.
