UMTS PAR SATELLITE : ADAPTATION DU STANDARD 3GPP UTRA FDD W-CDMA
04 January 2005
To make use of UMTS terrestrial radio interface for establishment of direct satellite communications allows to reduce user equipment development cost, and to operate mass marketed 3rd generation user equipment in mobile satellite systems. S-UMTS frequency bands are adjacent to terrestrial spectrum, which minimises cost for analogue modules adaptations. Numeric modules adaptation is minor, that is, S-UMTS reuses WCDMA wave form and 3GPP protocol stack, adaptations for operation in satellite environment are essentially introduced in radio resource management algorithms which are implemented in the Hub. This way S-UMTS radio interface allows to complement terrestrial cellular networks and can be applied to mobile broadcast satellite systems or security systems (crisis conditions, etc.)
