WELCOME ABOARD! This is your guidebook for a journey toward productivity improvement in a product development environment. It is based upon our own quest, in support of our product development work at AT&T Bell Laboratories, to shorten development intervals and improve product quality, while at the same time lowering costs. Our means to achieve productivity improvement and, along with it, product improvement, has been to adapt quality principles used in manufacturing and service industries to the development environment. This book presents a number of key concepts and practices, plus a description of how we applied them. Examples of programs that worked, and lessons from some that did not, are also included.
