Mobile network operators are creating new business units to focus on the fast increasing fraction of their revenues represented by machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The nature of M2M communications is different to traditional voice and broadband services. M2M is typically characterized by many communication devices, each sporadically transmitting small amounts of data. It is desirable for M2M devices to be battery powered, to have long life-times and to be simple to deploy, configure and program.
