Zinc hematoporphyrin in preparations of hematoporphyrin and hematoporphyrin derivative.

The blue-shifted emission from aged aqueous solutions of hematoporphyrin and its derivatives, reported by others to originate from special aggregates, is shown to originate from the zinc chelates of the porphyrins. Suggestions are made regarding the role of such zinc porphyrins in the localization of hematoporphyrin and its derivatives in tumors.
