Advancing connectivity in the automotive industry

Nokia’s wireless technologies are the backbone for many in-car services, delivering a safer and more enjoyable driving experience. For example, our cellular technology supports features such as navigation, emergency calls, over-the-air software updates, advanced driver-assistance systems, and remote vehicle control. While our innovation in Wi-Fi enables local connectivity inside the car, allowing passengers to connect their devices and enjoy entertainment or work on the go.

A new license with a Chinese automaker

Nokia enables automakers to harness our innovation by licensing the use of our patented technologies and I am delighted to say that Nokia has recently signed a new bilateral patent license agreement with a leading Chinese automaker. The agreement covers the use of Nokia’s cellular technologies from 2G to 5G, as well as our essential Wi-Fi technologies, in their connected vehicles.

An important milestone for our automotive licensing in China

We have now signed license agreements with five Chinese automakers, reflecting the increased respect shown by Chinese automakers for our intellectual property rights. I would like to again extend my gratitude to our Chinese automotive licensees for their professionalism and constructive spirit during our negotiations.

Companies who do not play by the rules should not have an unfair advantage

We encourage those Chinese automakers who have not yet entered into an agreement to accept their responsibilities as implementers of patented technologies. Because companies who do not play by the rules should not have an unfair advantage over those who do. And if necessary, we are prepared to litigate to ensure a level playing field for implementers of our technologies.
