Nokia 5G 360 Camera and RXRM bring viewport-dependent delivery (VDD) to life

Nokia 5G 360 Camera

The latest update of Nokia’s 5G 360 Camera and Real-time eXtended Reality Multimedia (RXRM) software is optimized from capture to viewing. With viewport-dependent delivery (VDD) feature implemented in the camera, updated RXRM solution reduces bandwidth usage, improves responsiveness, and simplifies deployment, providing an integrated mobile solution for high-quality 360° video and audio streaming.

This update highlights a clear evolution in 360° video delivery: viewport-dependent processing is performed inside the camera instead of external computing device. This technology shift is combined with RXRM’s integrated player and control interface, which results in high-quality lower bandwidth video content, lower latency, simpler deployments, and reduced system hardware cost - making high-quality, viewport-controlled video more accessible and efficient across diverse environments.

Why implementing VDD inside 360° camera is a breakthrough

VDD feature inside 360° camera brings multiple benefits to the users:

  • Bandwidth efficiency: Viewport dependent delivery inside the Nokia 5G 360 Camera optimizes uplink bandwidth usage all the way from the camera, making it easier to stream high-quality video without overloading the network.
  • Robust solution: With the VDD feature inside Nokia 5G 360 Camera, there is no need for extra hardware to process 360° video and audio, enabling robust single-device deployments and operation in challenging environments.
  • Immediate viewport changes: By using Nokia 5G 360 Camera with in-camera VDD feature, viewport is generated by advanced intelligent processing inside the camera, resulting in instantaneous viewport changes. Compared to PTZ cameras that rely on mechanical rotation, this avoids delays in getting the correct view and mitigates the tear and wear of moving parts.
  • Integrated solution: When VDD feature is implemented in Nokia 5G 360 Camera, there is no need for additional Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) enabled processing units to handle viewport delivery, resulting in much more cost-efficient and flexible way to deploy the system.

The VDD processing inside 360° camera is a novel feature in the market, and it complements the long list of other multimedia inventions by Nokia. For users, it brings even greater simplicity for Nokia RXRM and Nokia 5G 360 Camera solution deployment without compromising video quality. Upgrading existing solution with VDD processing inside camera requires only a firmware update, no need for investment in new camera equipment. New installations will benefit from the reduced hardware costs and simplified setup right from the beginning.

An edge processing unit can still be used

Even with the VDD feature inside the Nokia 5G 360 Camera, the RXRM system can still utilize GPU-enabled edge processing unit to provide additional features:

  • Full quality 360° content: When the full quality 360° video content is streamed from camera to edge processing unit, the RXRM system can provide full 360° content for AI analytics, efficiently removing any blind zones associated with limited field-of-view cameras. The RXRM system can also record full 360° content for further processing.
  • Multiple unique viewports: The RXRM system can perform VDD processing with GPU and provide multiple unique viewports to multiple simultaneous viewers. This is especially helpful if viewers are located away from each other and want to see the various views around the 360° camera at the same time.

The diagram below illustrates one possible deployment configuration of the RXRM system, where a GPU-enabled edge processing unit is connected to a Nokia 5G 360 Camera*, which streams full 360° content via cabled connection. This way, the RXRM edge processing unit can provide multiple simultaneous high quality low bandwidth real-time viewports to multiple users, further improving solution versatility.
