For telecommunication providers, keeping network and energy costs at a minimum while building more capacity to meet the demand for high-performance 5G services is paramount. At Nokia, we have seen very high customer demand for cost-efficient, compact outdoor baseband solutions, and we are responding to this demand with energy-optimized, future-proof products.

Let’s explore how our latest baseband solutions offer a simple upgrade to 5G with high capacity, the best performance-cost ratio and significant energy savings. We will also take a look at concrete examples from recent customer deployments.

Flexible site modernization with easy 5G upgrades

Modernizing the existing site infrastructure and upgrading your existing radio sites to 5G doesn’t need to be a complex and costly project. Our AirScale baseband portfolio, particularly the Tuuli compact outdoor baseband product family, helps our customers tackle this challenge.

Flexible deployment options

Based on our customers' needs, we have developed the Tuuli compact outdoor baseband solutions, which support both macro and small cell deployments. They can be installed on building walls, poles or lamp posts, making them suitable for any deployment setting.

Easy 5G modernization

One of the latest additions to our portfolio is the high-capacity Tuuli 26e, a compact outdoor baseband solution for macro sites. Tuuli 26e supports all radio generations from 2G and 3G to 4G and 5G, making it an optimal choice for simple site modernization. It also facilitates spectrum refarming from 4G to 5G, which helps safeguard our customers’ investments.

Enhanced capacity and coverage

Another product in the Tuuli family, Tuuli 24, is an optimal choice for enhancing 4G and 5G network capacity and coverage.

AI-ready and O-RAN compliant

Our customers can trust that investments made in our AirScale portfolio are future-proof. Naturally, our products are O-RAN compliant. We also understand the pressing need to integrate evolving AI capabilities into the network, which is why our products are AI-ready already today. Modular and scalable, the AirScale baseband enables effortless expansion of AI computing power, as the number and complexity of AI-for-RAN tasks grow.

Up to 70% energy savings in customer deployments

To support global climate objectives, we keep enhancing the energy efficiency of our products and solutions. Lower energy consumption helps our customers tackle the continuous increase in mobile traffic with reduced environmental impact and operational costs.

In recent customer deployments, we have replaced the existing Nokia Flexi baseband equipment with the energy-efficient Tuuli 26e compact outdoor baseband solution, which supports the earlier radio generations 2G and 3G in addition to 4G and 5G.

We have seen significant energy savings in all cases, such as the one with a major European telecommunication provider, where our game-changing multi-RAT Tuuli 26e delivered up to 70% energy savings at the modernized sites.

Focus on simplicity and sustainability

At Nokia, we focus on developing sustainable solutions that reduce the complexity and the environmental impact of network upgrades.

Re-using what is available

When modernizing sites, we can reuse the existing Flexi product casing and just slide in the new Tuuli 26e products, which are designed to fit perfectly in both the existing indoor and outdoor Flexi casings. Tuuli 26e is an outdoor product, and a great fit for both urban and rural deployments.

Simplified maintenance and commissioning

We have made the maintenance and commissioning of the Tuuli compact outdoor products very simple with WiFi Local Management Port (LMP). It enables technicians to access and manage units remotely in real time instead of having to reach the unit physically, which speeds up maintenance and enhances operational efficiency.

Of course, modernizing the baseband is just one part of the big equation. With our comprehensive approach to energy efficiency, we help our customers meet their ESG and business targets while paving the path to net-zero networks.
