Network Resource Director
Take advantage of SBA's adaptable, scalable, and modular design
to efficiently allocate network resources as needed.

What is Network Resource Director?
The Network Resource Director (NRD) is a critical component for managing and discovering network resources efficiently in a 5G environment. It is defined as a system that supports 3GPP services for Network Resource Discovery and Network Slice Selection Function. It utilizes containers and pods on x86 servers to enable horizontal scaling of network functions. The NRD architecture includes various Network Function components such as OAM for management interfaces, KPI-KCI for report generation, NRD for NF management services, Discovery for NF discovery services, NSSF for NS selection services.
Service based architecture
The 5G core network uses a Service-Based Architecture (SBA), where various Network Functions (NFs) interact through a common protocol based on OpenAPI v3, using JSON over HTTP/2. Each NF can have multiple instances, identified by a unique Network Function Instance ID (NFInstanceID), modeled as a UUID. Communication between these functions relies on services offered by each function, with a service producer (server) and a service consumer (client) executing specific tasks. Interfaces, like N11, consist of multiple services, such as Nsmf_PDUSession and Namf_Communication, where different functions act as servers. This approach, known as Service-Based interfaces (SBi), allows services to be reused across interfaces, enhancing flexibility, scalability, and modularity in the network, supporting applications like IoT and edge computing.
Cloud-native design
Cloud-native design brings a modern, dynamic, Kubernetes based environment for applications. It allows the implementation of newest technologies like AI/ML and Network Exposure, taking networks to a next level in terms of performance, automation and services.
Our cloud-native software design supports control/user plane separation (CUPS) architecture, software disaggregation, and state-efficient processing. It also provides a common data layer that improves resource utilization for network functions virtualization (NFV) and lowers total cost of ownership (TCO).
Benefits of the Network Resource Director
Horizontal scaling
NRD allows for the addition of multiple pods to each function, enabling horizontal scaling and efficient resource utilization.
Dynamic NF discovery
It supports dynamic discovery of NFs, which is crucial for the flexible and efficient operation of 5G networks.
Redundancy and resilience
NRD supports redundancy schemes like 1+1 active/backup and 1+1+1 all-active topologies, ensuring high availability and resilience.
TLS Support
NRD supports HTTP/2 over TLS, providing encryption and security for the HTTP/2 messages.
Role-Based access control
It offers role-based CLI access control, ensuring secure and controlled access to the system configurations.
Integration with prometheus and grafana
NRD can expose interfaces to CNCF components like Prometheus for monitoring and Grafana for visualization, enhancing observability and performance management.
Why choose Nokia’s Network Resource Director?
Cloud-native design
NRD is designed bottom up for cloud-native, integrating several open-source services and enabling a modern and dynamic environment for new applications. Furthermore, it implements CNF life cycle management operations (installing, healing, scale-in, scale-out and AI-based) and uses central DevOps/DelOps aspects for integration, delivery and image storage.
Any cloud architecture and network scalability
NRD is proven on any cloud architecture: on-premises, hybrid and public. This will meet any deployment requirement CSP may need.
