Fiber broadband for cable operators

Build a network today that meets your customers’ needs for decades to come

Getting to gigabit and beyond

Cable operators are facing greater challenges than ever before. Residential customers are demanding ever-greater bandwidth. Enterprise customers are demanding higher levels of service. And telcos, fiber overbuilders and wireless service providers are aggressively competing for your customers. Stay ahead of the game by strategically investing in a faster, more scalable network with higher reliability and lower operating expense.

Nokia fiber broadband solutions are leading the way, delivering three generations of PON technology on the same hardware: GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON. And the same network on which you deploy these technologies today, can scale to 50G, 100G and beyond in the future. All with no active electronics or periodic maintenance in the outside plant. Whether you are evolving your DOCSIS-based Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) network or expanding into new areas, Nokia can provide you with a future-proof platform that can connect everyone and everything.

Features and benefits

On every network metric, fiber provides superior results when compared to other access network options, including DOCSIS-based HFC networks. Fiber delivers:

Faster speeds

All multi-gigabit speeds, from GPON at 2.5 Gb/s to XGS-PON at 10 Gb/s and even 25 Gb/s are available today.

Symmetrical bandwidth

Fiber’s capacity is inherently suited to symmetric downstream and upstream performance.

Greater scalability

The physics of fiber, with 10,000 GHz of bandwidth, enables essentially limitless capacity.

Higher reliability

Fiber networks have little to no active outside plant components, and regular maintenance is not needed. Fiber is durable, lasting 50-75 years.

Superior performance

Fiber’s lower noise levels and signal attenuation lead to lower latency and less jitter.

Lower OPEX

Lower power consumption, greater durability, lower maintenance, etc., deliver around a 50% OPEX savings with fiber compared to HFC.

Greener technology

Fiber uses 7-12 times less energy, and the environmental impact of mining copper is over 15,000 times greater.

More than just fiber-to-the-home

Residential. Business. Smart cities. Mobile transport. Industry 4.0. Growing your business successfully means delivering services for many, if not all of these.

With fiber, you can do it all on the same infrastructure. Generating more revenues and introducing services more quickly with lower operating expenses and higher customer satisfaction. Fiber is the fastest, greenest, and most widely deployed broadband technology. And it keeps getting better.

Welcome to the Fiber for Everything era.

Shining the light on next-generation cable network evolution

Cable operators are at a crossroads. For decades, premium service offerings and the DOCSIS® technology have enabled them to stay well ahead of telcos that chose to sweat copper assets. Now the situation is turning on end. Traditional cable TV services are steadily declining, and telcos and overbuilders are rapidly expanding their fiber footprint.

Cablecos need to gain clarity about what they will need to look like by the end of this decade in order to remain relevant and to be competitive. In this Analysys Mason report, Research Director Rupert Wood discusses their options, explains why an XGS-PON upgrade program should be central to any strategy, and how moving to fiber can yield more revenue opportunities than DOCSIS 4.0.

Three reasons why you should deploy XGS-PON

XGS-PON is more than a technology, it is a business opportunity. Omdia’s report explains the strategic advantages of XGS-PON to compete better, monetize your network faster and be greener.

The next best thing to fiber in MDUs

When it comes to broadband performance, scalability and reliability, nothing beats fiber, which is why the number of FTTH subscribers is growing faster than any other access technology.

But multi-dwelling units (MDUs) – apartments, condominiums and the like – as well as hotels and mixed use properties can pose unique challenges. Installing fiber throughout these types of facilities can be costly, time consuming and complex. And in some cases, it’s simply impossible.

Fortunately, there is an alternative: Nokia’s Gigabit Connect solution. For cable operators, Gigabit Connect uses MoCA Access™ to deliver multi-gigabit services over a building’s existing coaxial cables. Tenant subscribers enjoy the same type of experience they’d have with FTTH, and MSOs are able to manage the network in the same way, as part of their FTTH network.
